We used this YouTube video as reference for a lot of this project!
Measuring the doorway:
To start, you need to measure the doorway of the area that you are attempting to create the arch in. Ours was 31 inches wide, so when I went to get the plywood, I asked them to cut the 8 ft sheet of plywood into the needed dimensions. We used 1/2 inch plywood. Cutting it at the store makes the work easier when you get home.

Cutting the arch:
Our ceilings are 8ft, so we did not want to lose any ceiling height when creating our diy arched doorway. Because of this, we opted to cut our arch into 4 corner pieces, instead of 2 full arch pieces.

To do this, you need to mark your dimensions on the plywood using a tape measurer.

Next, place a string and and nail in the middle of the plywood. This will ensure you create a “perfect” circle.

After drawing your circle, each corner piece of the plywood will be what you will use to create your arch. There should be a total of 4.

After cutting, you should be left with something like this on both sides.
Attaching the arches:
To attach the arches to create your DIY arched doorway, you will first need to chip away at any drywall in the doorway. This is so the plywood will sit flush in between the doorway. It will also need to sit inside of the doorway to account for the 1/4 inch of drywall that you will be placing over the plywood so that everything sits flush.

You can see the DIY Arched doorway coming together!

Using this piece of Vinyl Flex Archway Corner Bead, this is what made the arch finally look like an arch.

After the arch was attached using a power staple gun, everything was mudded and taped in preparation for drywall mud. THIS is the most critical step. I suggest looking at as many drywall mudding and sanding videos as needed to make sure this step is flawless. I over mudded the first time and it led to sooooo much drywall dust. With mud, less is more. It’s all in the application, vs how much mud you actually apply!
It will take about 3 coats of mudding and sanding to get the most flawless look, but it is worth it.
Once everything was sanded smooth, we were ready to paint!

The paint color we went with was Svelte Sage by HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams.

I absolutely love how our DIY arched doorway came out!

This looks so good! And I’m impressed with your drywall skills. In texas they go the lazy route and do the stupid orange peel look but I would love to change my walls to smooth.
Thank you. Yes we learned a lot with drywall of this project!
