I will be starting a new end of the month Q&A series taking questions from my readers, both on Instagram, and on my email list. If you aren’t following me on Instagram, why not? 🙂
I recently did a Q&A poll on IG back in the beginning of July, and I wanted to drop my answers here. If you want to submit questions for August, click here!
What is an easy first project with big impact?
Good question, an easy first project with big impact is board and batten! Board and batten can instantly transform a space for little money and little time.
I’ve done it several times in my home and absolutely love it!
Tips for painting bathroom cabinets? Do I need to sand really well?
Sanding really well in my opinion is relative. To get a really good paint adhesion on most surfaces, a light sanding is necessary using a sanding block, along with a really good primer and paint color of your choice.
Do you have a monthly budget for projects? Or how do you fit them into your budget?
When planning projects, I like to plan out in seasons (winter, spring, summer, fall). Based on planning into the seasons, I can set aside a specific amount that I would like to spend during that timeframe and project. For smaller projects, I am more impulsive:)
What’s you fave of all your projects?
This changes with each project to be honest because I feel like my skill level advances after each DIY. Currently, my fave is my powder room makeover. I didn’t even know it had this type of potential!
What was your first project you did on your own, using power tools?
My fireplace was my first ever DIY. I made it over a third time this year, but you can go back and look at it after I made it over the first time, which was my first ever project! It has gone through a few transitions though, each one getting better and better. I absolutely love it now.
How does hubby feel about all of your projects?
He agrees with most, and loves to participate for the most part. He just likes to be included in decisions, so as long as I ask his opinion, he is great about it all!
Best way to decorate bookshelves? Seen several methods but I’m stumped, help?
Rules of threes, high/low objects, pops of greenery, mix of materials, books! All my tips and all the things I incorporate when styling bookshelves or regular shelves.
What are some common projects people underestimate the time required to DIY?
Flooring takes me forever, but I am not sure people know how long it takes. Also, crown molding. I hate it! I would totally rather hire that out. The cuts are super tricky.
What draws you to interior design?
I love to see spaces transform to their maximum potential and beyond. I like to feel joy when I enter a space, so creating a space that is both functional and pretty gives me chills.
How did you start? I feel like I might enjoy DIY but always talk myself out of it. Fear of failure…
I started by just starting. I felt like it was my house, so the worse that could happen would be that I mess up my space and have to fix it. As long as it wasn’t something that could burn my house down, then I was/am willing to try.
What color or pattern do you like to work with the most and which the least?
I love the color blue and white, and wood. Those are my favorite mixes. I don’t have a fav pattern but if I HAD to pick one, it would be blue and white pinstripe or navy and white polka dots.
Thanks so much for your questions. Please feel free to ask me questions for August’s Q&A via IG on shoot me an email.
